Research and Reflect: Man / INhumanity updated!

Reflection for 1/31/12
With the same partner, reflect on the situation in Sighet and connect it to the incidents you and your classmates have researched, online. Discuss the following in your blog posts:
  1. What does Moshe the Beadle report when he returns to Sighet from his deportation?
  2. What is the people's response to his report and his warnings? Why do you think they responded that way?
  3. What has happened in Sighet by page 7?
  4. What connection can you see to the events of WWII in this small Hungarian town and those that you have been reading about in the news? In the events themselves or in the responses of people to those events?
  5. Be sure to include your name and your partner's name in the comment

Sierra and I found a sad tragic story about man's inhumanity to man.

The story was about a brutal murder of a mentally disabled woman, they had fed her vegetable oil, spices, detergent, urine, and medications, then forced to write a suicide note, stabbed to death, wrapped in plastic, put in a garbage can and dumped in a school parking lot, according to police.
The police believe that this crime was done by 6 of her "friends"

This article talks about how persecutions in Islamic countries against Christians. For example in Egypt, many Christians have been beaten, shot and stabbed to death by angry muslims. Also in Syria, hundreds of Christians have been killed since the anti-government unrest began.

Source: Genocide Intervention

Since the 60's, the country Burma has been under control of the Burmese military government, continuously launching major counter-insurgency (anti-rebellion) operations against ethnic minorities, through means violating human rights. To target the smaller populations, the government has documented thousands of cases of executions, torture, rape, forced labor, burning entire villages. Now in the 21st century, people are using radios to signal inbound attacks, allowing preparation to counteract the burmese military.

Our source was: Genocide in Darfur

Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, religious, racial, and national group.

In Darfur, the Sudanese government has unleashed African Arabs, called the Janjaweed, to wipe out tribal blacks. The former director of African Affairs at the National Security Council for the Clinton White House says, " "These guys have a racist ideology that sees the Arab population as the supreme population that would like to see the subjugation of non-Arab peoples. They're criminal racketeers that have been supported very directly by the government to wage the war against the people of Darfur." Survivors say that they have been attacked by bombs falling from planes, raping women, and send in ground forces or attack helicopters to oversee the attack. One of the survivors, Toona, described the attack: "Some of them dragged my son away, others slaughtered my husband, and some others took me to the side, and tortured me and left me there. My newborn was snatched off my back, and was left lying on the ground. I found him in that situation when they let me go."

While researching about genocide, we came across the story of a boy named Rhama. Rhama once lived in Darfur until his village was destroyed by the Janjaweed, a militia paid and armed by the Sudanese Government

Jerica and I found a tragic story about the after math of Hurricane Katrina and how it affected some prisoners.

While Hurricane Katrina hit the streets of New Orleans, the sheriff's department abandoned hundreds of prison inmates in the city's jail. They were left there to die. Some who survived saw bodies floating in the floodwaters. Many of the men held at jail had been arrested for offenses like criminal trespass, public drunkness and disorderly conduct.

Chad, Zach- This story is about al quaeda and the "holy mission".

Al Quaeda is a group made by Osama Bin Ladin and their goal is to eradicate all non- islamic and especially westerners from the world and to force everyone to believe in their god. They have no regard or respect for anyone even slightly different making them a prime example of history repeating itself through genoicide.

1.) Moshe the Beadle when he returns tells the people of Sighet the tragic attacks on the Jewish people and the cruelty of the Germans. The Jewish people had to dig their own graves and the Germans would use them as targets and shoot them and they would fall into the grave they dug. He warned people to leave and get out of the country.

2.) The response of the people towards Moshe the Beadle was they didn't believe him and thought he was a "mad man." We think they don't want to believe this because people don't think it could be possible for someone to eradicate a whole race and they don't believe something that horrible could happen.

3.)The German soldiers arrive in the town or village acting polite and friendly and stay people's homes and were treated like family.

4.) The connection we made from the news we read was the cruelty towards the people that are different. Like the disabled woman was different, like how the jewish people looked different from the germans.

1. Moshe the beadle's story was about, how the polish territory had been taken charge by the Gestapo. The Jews there had to get out and were made to do their work. After they were done digging up their graves, Gestapo started slaughtering the Jews one by one. They also used babies as their targets by throwing them up in the air.
2. They did not believe him. they thought he's was going crazy or became a mad man. They also thought that he tried to make them feel pity for him. He told them the story because he wanted them to prepare themselves while they can and they still have time. They acted this way because they felt that, that these events would never happen to them.
3. The events that happen in page 7 was that, with government permission, german troops entered hungarian territory.
4. Just like the research yesterday, the connection between the book & WWII & the resources is that innocent people were being killed or harmed violently because of one's (country's) power to do so.

1)Moshe the Beadle reports that the German soldiers had taken them out to the forest had had them dig there own graves. He also reports of the people who had died painfully and how a tailor begged to save his sons and how the soldiers shot babies as targets.
2) The people refused to believe his horrific story and called him crazy. They also all eventually decided to ignore his story. They probably all responded that way because the story was so horrific they probably did not want to believe it. Also like they said they did not think the Germans would be able to come even close to them.
3)The German Soldiers were allowed to arrive in the village by the government and they stayed in peoples homes and acted polite towards the hosts of the house.
4)Just like in WW2 how there were camps and how the nazis tried to exterminate the jews, groups like Al- Quaeda are trying to exterminate "infidels" and make the muslim religion the only religion. Also there are still people to this way just like the citizens of Sighet who refuse to believe in the horrors happening.

-When Moshe the Beadle returns from his deportation, he told stories of the torture that the deportees had to endure. He reported of the huge graves that the Jews were forced to dig, and the merciless killing of the Jews that followed.
-Many people refused to believe Moshe's horror stories, and some even refused to listen to them. Some say that he had "gone mad" and he was only searching for pity. I think they responded this way because his stories seemed unimaginable and not likely to happen.
-By page 7, the German soldiers were allowed to enter their territory and they were polite and friendly and were treated like family.
-Even today, different races are being treated unfairly and unequally. For example, in Darfur, the Sudanese have been killing the people of Darfur, just like Moshe the beadle witnessed the jews being killed.

1)He came back with tragic news of what the Germans were forcing the Jews to do, which was to dig their own graves.
2)They said that he was out of his mind and didn't know what he was talking about. They took it as a joke because they felt that the Germans couldn't get to them either way.
3) The Germans entered Hungarian territory and they acted friendly which was being fake towards the Jews. They also stayed in their homes as if they were residents of that household.
4)There were still inhumanity of humans and racism. They were basically being treated in a bad way. Today, muslims are being treated as if they were the people who caused 9/11
