Individual Reader Response LC #3: Dialectical Journal Practice

Night: Final Exercise

This is an individual assignment, but you may discuss the questions with others in your team. Be sure that whatever answers you come up with are written in your own words.
  1. Pick 3 quotes from anywhere in the whole novel that you consider significant. Copy them, along with the page numbers.
  2. Write a short critical stance response about one of the quotes. (one paragraph)
  3. Write 2 thesis statements for which you could write well-supported literary analysis essays. Your responses to Lit Circles #1 and #2, as well as your dialectical journals, should help you with this task. Some possible literary elements you might use:
    • Setting (in this case it would be the historical context)
    • Theme
    • Character

Group Reader Response LC #2: Dialectical Journal Practice

This is an individual assignment, but you may discuss the questions with others in your team. Be sure that whatever answers you come up with are written in your own words.
  1. Critical Stance: Wiesel chronicles the gradual dehumanization of the prisoners.
    • First, define “dehumanization”
    • Then, describe the behavior of the various prisoners that shows their gradual transformation from their normal behavior as human beings.
    • Last, describe the behavior of Eliezer, the changes that he notices and his response to them.

  2. Dialectical Journal Entries
    • Find quotations for each of the comments you have made in question #1
    • Share these amongst group members so that you each have a complete DJ upon which you can rely for the following weeks’ discussions.

Group Reader Response LC #1: Dialectical Journal Practice

On a sheet of folder paper, attempt to answer the following questions individually. After every team member has finished, discuss as a group and post a team response as a comment on this blog.

  1. Interpretive Stance: Characterize the narrator of Night. Describe him physically (age, family, culture, education, etc) and then describe his values, personality, relationships.
  2. Critical Stance:
    • Discuss how Wiesel sets up the contrast between the panic of the Jews with each new decree or action of the government and their attempts to reassure themselves and to adjust to each new infringement on their freedom.
    • Browse the US Holocaust Museum website and read up on the facts about the Holocaust. Compare those with the events of the book. Describe the connections between the historical event and one man’s experience in the Wiesel book.

  3. Once everyone in the group has completed the individual responses, discuss and post a team response as a comment on this blog.
  4. Due this period

Research and Reflect: Man / INhumanity updated!

Reflection for 1/31/12
With the same partner, reflect on the situation in Sighet and connect it to the incidents you and your classmates have researched, online. Discuss the following in your blog posts:
  1. What does Moshe the Beadle report when he returns to Sighet from his deportation?
  2. What is the people's response to his report and his warnings? Why do you think they responded that way?
  3. What has happened in Sighet by page 7?
  4. What connection can you see to the events of WWII in this small Hungarian town and those that you have been reading about in the news? In the events themselves or in the responses of people to those events?
  5. Be sure to include your name and your partner's name in the comment
