Literature Circle #3 Of Mice and Men

As a group, apply the "five step" process to the novel.
Here is the adapted process:
  1. Step 1: What is your final impression of the novel. How did you feel about the ending? about the characters and their lives?
  2. Step 2: Plot: What were the conflict and resolution of the novel?
  3. Step 3: Characters: What happened to each of them and why?
  4. Step 4: Setting: How did the time and place, the culture, the society, contribute to the story?
  5. Step 5: Insight into human lives or society or nature and the universe

Discuss and then post your thoughtful and well supported responses here.
Be sure to include all the group members' names.

Sorry Ms.Sueoka, but my group and I made a mistake. We sent our Literature Circle #3 answers for Of Mice and Men, but we our #5 was not answered so here it is.

#5. This book insights into human lives because you have Lennie and George that are so called Migrate Workers and so that relates to human life, because there are some people in the world that move from place to place to be able to work at a job. Also, human's do whatever they can to get a job, for the money that they will earn if they work at a certain job that pays them an equal amount of money that they think the workers deserve. It also relates to society because of the same answer as this book relating to human lives.

1. My groups final impression of the book was we were sad when Lennie died because even though he did do a lot of " bad" things it wasn't on purpose and he always had a good heart so it was depressing when he died.

2. The conflict was that no matter were George and Lennie went Lennie would unintentionally screw things up for the both of them. The resolution is when Lennie finally made one of the biggest mess ups ever which was killing curly's wife George had no choice but to kill him so that the other characters including Curly wouldn't torture him.

3. In the end George is forced to shoot Lennie, Lennie dies, Curly is filled with vengeance to get back at Lennie for both breaking his arm and killing his wife, and the other workers pretty much return to normal.

4. The time setting contributed to the story because it was a time when men usually didn't travel with each other much and to see two men not only traveling with each other but standing up for each other was miraculous.

5. This book gives you insight into human nature because it shows how some men are willing to stand up for each other. It also shows how sometimes men can be cruel to each other like Curly was and it shows how some men can retin their innocence even after so much like Lennie.

Assessment score: AS (2+)

Chad, Lachae, Courtney: great job of analyzing the different elements of the novel and showing how it all "adds up" to the theme or insight of the piece.
